A sequel to the original ‘The Way’ Movie is apparently in production with Martin Sheen again taking the lead role alongside James Nisbitt and Yorick van Wageningen from the original cast. The life-changing movie helped popularize the camino to so many people worldwide and has inspired many to take their own Camino journey. Emilio Estévez has said “The Way” has moved so many people that a sequel had to be made” even though that’s taken over a decade to realize his ambition as Estevez fought to get rights to the film for a follow up.
“Well, people have written long emails, they’ve reached out to our Facebook page, and talked about how the film changed their life. My dad [Sheen] gets snail mail because he’s not a computer guy — he doesn’t have an email address. So he’ll receive letters weekly from people who talk about how they saw the film and were inspired to go off and do the Camino, and now they’re on their third, fourth, fifth Camino. Sometimes, you know, it’ll just be something as simple as, “I don’t know if Emilio will get this note, but I just want him to know that this film changed my life. Thank you and God bless.” I never fail to get choked up by it. All that to say, this movie has been kind of running this quiet marathon for the past 12 years. That’s not anything we ever imagined would happen“.
The sequel revisits protagonist Tom ( Martin Sheen) a decade after his first pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago in the footsteps of his deceased son Daniel (Emilio Estevez), as he reconnects with his walking companions Joost (van Wageningen) and Jack (Nisbitt).
In the movie Tom is now embedded with Doctors Without Borders in northern Nigeria, performing surgery in a war zone, and is sent a copy of Jack’s (James Nisbitt) bestselling book based on their shared experience, in which a disturbing secret is revealed. Enraged, Tom leaves to search for Jack and find answers to questions that have haunted him for a decade. His journey reunites him with Joost and leads them through Amsterdam, Dublin, Brussels and France before returning to Spain and the Camino.
We can’t wait for the return of the most influential Camino movie ever made!
