Burgos Cathedral

Burgos Cathedral lies at the heart of the city and it’s magnificent architecture has meant recognition as a UNESCO world heritage site. ‘Our Lady of Burgos’ was begun in the 13th century and was completed in the 15th and 16th centuries. The grandeur of it’s incredibly ornate interior is breathtaking and even modern day pilgrims feel overwhelmed, (let along their medieval counterparts). The sandstone takes on a rosy pink hue at certain times of the day and the many Chapels lining the sides of the Cathedral are worth exploring. The legendary Spanish hero El Cid is also buried here and his coffin visiable on the side of a wall. The Cathedral stands testimony to the rising power and wealth of Christianity in Spain during this era, as well as a celebration of the unification of Spain. According to UNESCO ‘The entire history of Gothic art is summed up in its superb architecture and its unique collection of works of art, including paintings, choir stalls, reredos, tombs and stained-glass windows’. It is a must see on the Camino.
